TUN Day 12: 08/02/09 - Kunming

. Wednesday, April 1, 2009

My update is finally nearing the end, only left with a few more days!

So i reached Kunming via the sleeper bus in the early hours of the morning of this day. And i realised we didn't prepare much for this part of the journey, where to stay and what to visit etc. So luckily, there was Su Rong, who brought us to take the bus to this popular hostel which was full and coz we didn't book in advance, we were told to wait to see if there was any vacancies. So Su Rong offered to stay behind to look after our stuff coz she wasn't hungry, while me and Junyuan went around the place looking for breakfast.

And we ate 过桥米线, which was the speciality dish of Yunnan Province. The method of eating is quite interesting. You are supposed to dump all the ingredients like the meat slices, veggies, egg and noodles into the hot bowl of soup that was quite oily to cook them and then eat it, machiam like steamboat.
And then we walked around the area, which was the shopping district and saw this building with the spire on top. Tatlin's Monument to the Third International came to our minds immediately. Funny how this kind of things get stuck in your head forever.
Anyway, we didn't get a place at the popular hostel. It's called Hump Hostel anyway. So we were referred to a guesthouse nearby, which was a completely different picture as there were no foreigners over there, all locals.

We went to 滇池 in the afternoon and while enjoying a nice pot of tea by the scenic lakeside, we saw this 3 couples taking their wedding photos. I know i'm evil but i think their poses were really funny. And they looked as if they had lots of practices with the posing before. I made a mental note on the spot not to have my wedding photos end up like that.
Later on in the day, i went to 翠湖公园, which was a park not far away from where we were staying. I went alone coz Junyuan wasn't feeling very well and wanted to rest.
Tulips were blooming everywhere.
And there were groups of musicians scattered throughout the park, entertaining the visitors. I particularly enjoyed this group playing Xinjiang music. There were dancers too.
